Changing of the Guard
When Legacy opened it’s doors almost 5 years ago, we (Matt & Liz) wanted to create a brewery that adapted to, what we saw at the time, as changing consumer expectations – breweries close to home or work, plenty of parking, food nearby, variety of beverage options, etc. And we did just that. We also wanted to make a space that was an extension of our home – from comfy sitting areas to even a kids play area (yeah, that one may not have been the best idea). What we created was a local hangout that respects the art of good craft beer and offers variety, while also providing a space where all are welcome, friendships were born, and events everyone could look forward to. We couldn’t be prouder of what we have created in the home we’ve built.
In the process of it all, Liz & I gladly lost many nights of sleep to chart the next steps for the brewery. We’ve sacrificed date nights for shifts at the bar, family weekends for hosting events at the brewery and personal financial growth as we re-invested big dollars into our dream. Between the 5 years of doing business and the years leading to our opening, time has taken its toll. We simply feel we’ve taken Legacy as far as we can go. For that reason, we will be listing our shares in Legacy for sale with the goal of finding a partner with a fresh and energetic approach to work alongside Warren to take Legacy to the next level. We don’t want to wait until our passion has been completely exhausted ultimately leading the brewery to suffer – we’ve worked too damn hard for that to happen.
Since inception, Liz & I have always operated in the best interest of the brewery and for the brewery’s continued success. On the day Covid closed us down, we gave all the revenue generated to our staff to hold them over until we could reopen. We started a crowler club and began canning 6-packs by hand to weather a year of primarily to-go beer sales. When they said you need food, we said “well, ok!”. When costs of operating continued to climb, we doubled down with new partners, an expansion, private event space and re-opened our kitchen. Each year, our brewery continues to grow, both in barrelage and in revenue.
Anyone who knows us knows that we are fully transparent so when we say we are not closing, you can believe that we are not. We understand this decision comes at a time when the climate in the industry is volatile and there have been as many closures of local breweries as there have been openings. That is NOT what is happening here. We are proud of the brewery we have built and will continue to operate in the best interest of the business and the community. We are and will continue to be as involved as we can and will forever be champions of this little slice of heaven. We wanted to create a legacy and we did just that.
And while we work to find the next passionate partner to work alongside Warren & Michelle in continuing the dream we started, our staff will continue to smile, greet, pour, and chat. Liz will continue to run the many awesome events we have lined up and Matt & Warren will continue to make the best damn beer we can for you for as long as it takes.
We know that this post comes as a shock to many of you and there will be questions (and unfortunately, rumors) surrounding this post. In an effort to keep the rumor mill from running amok, Liz and I will be making ourselves available to answer your questions. We will both be at Legacy Thursday, January 25th at 6pm to listen to some great live music by Sparks in the Garden as well as answer any of your questions and hear your thoughts.
Thank you for your time and continuing to support our Legacy.
